CZ gives the clearest coverage commitment yet
CZ says the loss from the Binance incident may be higher than a circulating estimate, but that it “will cover.”
The comment responded to an estimate from 0xngmi arguing that Binance holds about $144 billion in assets under custody and that, after stablecoin freezes, the remaining loss could be around $1 billion, or 0.69% of assets under custody.
CZ did not endorse that exact calculation. His wording explicitly says the loss may be higher.
What the statement confirms
The important part is the coverage commitment. It reinforces earlier statements from CZ and Binance that user funds are safe and indicates that customers are not expected to absorb the incident’s loss.
It does not yet explain whether coverage will come from Binance’s corporate capital, the SAFU emergency fund, insurance, recovered assets, shareholder support or a combination of sources.
Why the $1 billion estimate remains provisional
The external calculation assumes that frozen USDT, USDC and other issuer-controlled assets can be excluded from the realised loss. Frozen does not automatically mean recovered: issuers and Binance still need to complete the relevant recovery or reissuance process.
The estimate also depends on the final wallet attribution. Hyperdash previously placed the gross cross-chain drain at about $5.60 billion, but Binance has not confirmed that total, and asset values continue to move.
The $144 billion, $1 billion and 0.69% figures should therefore be read as an external balance-sheet comparison, not Binance’s final accounting.
What Binance still needs to publish
- the final gross amount transferred without authorisation;
- the assets frozen or recovered;
- the net realised loss;
- the capital source used for coverage;
- and confirmation that withdrawals and customer balances remain fully backed.
For now, the message is direct: CZ says the losses will be covered, even if the final amount is higher than the current net-loss estimate.
This is a developing story. Signal21 will update the figures when Binance publishes a reconciled balance sheet or incident report.
